International Design Workshop in Brussels, Belgium. (2017)

Student Representative of the University of Sheffield

This international design workshop was organized by Metrolab, a transdisciplinary and inter-university laboratory for applied and critical urban research funded by the Brussels Capital Region through its ERDF program (2014–2020).

The Urban Inclusion Workshop aimed to develop a reflective, realistic, and process-oriented understanding of the outcomes of specific projects—or the ERDF program as a whole—in terms of social inclusion. Over 14 days, the workshop featured conferences, field trips, evening lectures, and collaborative sessions. Approximately 30 students from universities in the US, UK, and Belgium participated, working in four groups on distinct case studies. These cases, addressing food trade, healthcare, culture, and leisure, explored critical questions of social inclusion and justice.

Our team focused on Droh!me, located in the southern, more affluent part of Brussels in the municipality of Uccle, at the border between the Sonian Forest and the Boondael residential neighborhood. The project seeks to transform a historical racetrack into a cultural and environmental landmark through innovative governance models and programming. By tackling issues such as borders, inclusivity, and economic accessibility, our proposals advocated for integrating the site into regional green networks and socio-cultural systems. Emphasizing community participation and educational opportunities, we proposed alternative governance structures, such as Public-Private ‘Plus’ and Public-Public partnerships, to enhance accessibility, sustainability, and social responsibility. These recommendations aim to redefine the park as a space fostering regional connectivity, conservation, recreation, and education.
